Swee'Pea and Other Playground Legends: Tales of Drugs, Violence and Basketball
Published in Hardcover by Michael Kesend Publishing, Ltd. (April, 1991)
Author: John Valenti
Average review score:

The Fall Of Ball
MAGIC JOHNSON WITH A JUMP SHOT, that's what they called him, who am i talking about? Read on my friend. In this grippin and tear jerking story of street ball, we learn the true goods and evils of the game. In this story, the main character, Lloyd "Swee' Pea" Daniels, struggles against his addication to "the rock". This story will give you the true vision of what it takes to be a great, and the situations young urban kids have to go through to make their dreams come true.

Sad dramatic story of fallen legend
Great book about could-have-been basketball legend Lloyd Daniels. A great inside look of how the glory of basketball corrupts youth. Inspirational because of Lloyd Daniels' limited success in the NBA and CBA. I loved this book because of its rags to seemingly riches to rags story about the Swee'Pea Lloyd Daniels.

Tales from the African Frontier
Published in Hardcover by Safari Press (15 January, 2000)
Authors: Daniel P. Mannix and John A. Hunter
Average review score:

Unexpected pleasures
This book goes well beyond Mr. Hunter's usual white hunter/safari fair. It is about a collection of characters, Arab, African, European and others who were around at the turn of the 20th century and on into the late '40's. It would probably NOT be considered politically correct, but Mr. Hunter and his co-author Daniel Mannix try their best to be unbiased in telling their tales. It begins with the story of Arab slaver Tippu Tib who had many adventures, including helping Stanley find Livingstone! A nice sketch of John Boyes (who was for a time, the king of the Kikuyu) is included for those who haven't read his own book. It finishes with Dr. L. S. B. Leakey who was as much Kikuyu as white man. I was unaware of his role in the Mau Mau troubles. In all, there are 15 tales of individuals and families who were part of the opening of Africa. As the authors say in the end: "Some were cruel, some prideful; probably a number of these pioneers were unwise, as all humans are. Many were heroes in the best sense of the word. But they all shared in a quality of courage which is the essential ingredient-at any frontier, on any continent, and at any time."

Finally, there is a nice bibliography at the end. I hope to read many of those tomes listed, if I can find them!

Wonderful Adventure
A terrific read, and one of my favorite books of adventure. Includes a fascinating account of the Tsavo Lions, and great tales of heroism and hardship. I'm extremely happy to see this classic back in print. Inspiring history, unbelievable accounts of courage, greed, and patriotism. True stories of Lewis Leakey, missionaries, eccentric noblemen, safari hunters, and the founders of Hills coffee! New insight into the Victorian age of adventure. Delightfully written, funny and touching. The best written series of historical stories I've seen.

Talk to Your Computer: Speech Recognition Made Easy
Published in Paperback by Waveside Publishing (01 September, 1999)
Authors: Dan G. Newman, David Newman, Daniel Newman, and Dan Newman
Average review score:

Still timely, complete, and helpful
I completely agree with the other review - this book covers an amazing scope of material related to voice dictation software and hardware. The author draws on a vast amount of real-world experience implementing voice recognition software. And the book provides accurate and insightful guidance on what path to take if you try to set up voice recognition software yourself. The range of advice runs from informed, candid and critical evaluation of the major software programs, to what kind of wear-and-tear to expect on your vocal chords as you begin to replace typing with voice dictation! Nobody should evaluate a move to voice recognition technology, or purchase software or hardware without this book. While the book has been in print a couple years, I found it quite timely - with still valid characterizations of the various software options available. A "must" for the bookshelf of every office and organization. And certainly a critical resource for those responsible for implementing voice recognition software.

Essential reading for any potential user
I'm technologically experienced yet I have hesitated to try to set up voice recognition, even though a complimentary copy of VR software sits in my drawer. That's over. So far, this book has answered every question I have and has given me confidence that this technology can do what I want. I have three favorite "aspects" of the book --- 1) it is a stunningly clear presentation of the material. The language is jargon-free and brief, and best of all the book is laid out in in question-and-answer format, which works perfectly for this kind of material. 2) The book is populated with quotes from and descriptions of the experiences of real users, which make the advice come to life. 3) The breadth of the book is surprisingly broad, ranging from "should you / how to" topics (of course) to things I didn't expect, such as how to change the order of various tasks to take advantage of the technology, and how to continually improve the performance of the package (your system plus your own speech) over time. There's not much fluff.

So, I'm very impressed. This kind of book, executed this well, should be available for far more products than just VR.

Tall Ships Down : The Last Voyages of the Pamir, Albatross, Marques, Pride of Baltimore, and Maria Asumpta
Published in Hardcover by International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press (18 October, 2002)
Author: Daniel S. Parrott
Average review score:

A Great Read
This book is a great read for both professional mariners and armchair sailors alike. Professionals will appreciate the insight into these disasters and their causes, while the armchair sailor will find the sea stories fascinating enough to keep their interest. The author's writing style is easy to read, and his research is fairly extensive. All in all an outstanding book that deserves a place in any nautical library.

A Must-Read for Professional Sailors
This book is an outstanding study of five sail training vessel accidents. It is not only interesting, but full of important lessons for all sailors, particularly for professional sailors of traditional vessels. Captain Parrott has done the sailing world a great service by analysing these tragedies, not with romance or melodrama, but with compassion and empathy. As a seasoned professional himself, he investigates without being judgemental, and provides us with information we can use to prevent future accidents.

Team Building Through Physical Challenges
Published in Paperback by Human Kinetics (T) (June, 1992)

Experiential learning for children in Junior schools
This is an excellent book for use by trainers who want to use experiential learning activities to help children in junior schools learn concepts such as team work, co-operative learning and celebrating team success.

The activities and props listed are easily found in school gyms or can be obtained with a little ingenuity. Activities are suitable for chldren from the ages of 8 and upwards. I have found the way the instructions for each activity is laid out at the end of the book in the form of challenge cards, particularly useful, as I don't have to re-layout these for my trainers. They could be easily made and laminated into cards and made referencing easy and fast.

Also of great help to trainers are the questions found on the Organiser card which is found in the Appendix section. I have used the activities with Boys from 9-12 years old and they are able to understand the objectives of the activities and draw very useful lessons from them. Anyone intending to work with children of these ages should get a copy of this book, and you won't be disappointed.

excellent book , ideas for working with young persons
I got fantastic ideas for working with young problmatic boys in a special school, very good for helping in the area of team building and boosting self esteem

This Is Not a Book About Dodos
Published in School & Library Binding by E P Dutton (January, 1992)
Author: Daniel Lehan
Average review score:

Rare breed
An artist lived on a mountain and every day went out to paint. One morning, a huge flock of dodos suddenly appeared. The artist was very upset by the big, ugly, bizarre birds whose number made them impossible to ignore.

Eventually, the artist learned to love them. So do readers. Dodos litter the pages of this book, their color and variety resembling squares in a quilt.

Then the dodos disappear as suddenly as they appeared. The artist coped in a very special way, provding children with a rich lesson. I hope this rare breed of book does not go the way of the dodo birds. Alyssa A. Lappen

Please Reprint!
I used this book with my fourth grade class. They loved it. I had picked it up years ago, and enjoyed it, so I though I would share it. It is inspirational story and shows the influences of the world around us! It teaches kids to treasure everything no matter how small.
